Reasons to Stay

Content warning: suicide and mental health. A letter to a stranger about reasons to stay, reasons to exist, and reasons to endure.

Content warning: suicide and mental health

Someone who loves me sent me a link.

It's a website where people anonymously write letters to complete strangers. Letters about reasons to stay. Reasons to exist. Reasons to endure, to continue, to matter.

Some days we don't need a reason. Some days we don't even think about needing one. Some days we know we have them. And some days… we really need them.

The site is The Letters Page

I was sent it because I love writing. Because I love poetry. And because I know how lonely, how dark, and how heavy life can get.

Not because I'm looking for a reason right now. But because there was a time when I was.

Hey. Hey you.

Yes, you.

I'm talking to you. Well, writing to you. Not knowing your name, your story, or your smile.

But in a way, I do know you. I've been where you are.

I've searched everywhere for a reason. Any reason. A spark in a dust mote. A lyric in a song. A stranger's face on a crowded street.

Some reasons are like houses. You move in. You unpack. You live there for years. They hold you through seasons you didn't think you'd survive.

Others are brief. Like a snowflake resting on your finger. Here just long enough to remind you it's real, before it melts, or drifts away.

I've known both.

And every time one was left behind, I learned this: there is always another ahead.

You'll find a new one. Or a fresh one. Or maybe even return to one you thought you'd lost.

I'm here for you. We're here for you.
